Spirited

Spirited emerged from a period of deep inner silence. In winter of 2007-2008, I went into a self-designed guitar retreat. I described myself at the time as a guitar monk. This was, perhaps, an exaggeration of my actual situation.
As I explored the guitar and pushed ever further into my practice, a silence opened up within me that turned out to be a fertile field for harvesting songs.
The first song, O Hidden Life, came from a collaboration with Malavika Mohanan. Mali and I were at a retreat of a close group of friends in Dungeness, Washington in November 2007, and what began as an exploration of a melody Mali was singing over a poem became the version of O Hidden Life that appears as the first track of Spirited.
As 2007 concluded and the winter of 2008 spread its frost across Nashville, I found myself fighting off the cold in a small trailer in my parents’ backyard in Franklin, TN. Humble beginnings for the songs that are now Spirited.
The songs on Spirited appear in chronological order as they came to me. Mali and I worked out O Hidden Life in November 2007, and the last song, Round and Round, came at the beginning of September 2008.
These songs are prayers. In no way do I feel like I “made” these songs. Instead, the muse visited me in a mighty and quiet way, and these melodies and chords and lyrics are the result.
The individual song links take you to pages with the lyrics and chords of the songs. If you want to learn how to play them, check out my online guitar lessons or, better yet, contact me to set up an in-person or Skype lesson.
